Applications
- Diagnosis and follow-up of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC)
- hCT measurements and pentagastrin test (Pg test) are systematically carried out for an early diagnosis of cancer in at-risk families or in case of relapse among previously-operated patients.
- hCT doubling time as a powerful prognosis factor in MTC-affected patients
- Adjunct to diagnosis of multiple endocrine neoplasia type II and familial MTC
- Occasionally useful in the diagnosis and follow-up of islet cell tumors

Coated tubes
Two monoclonal antibodies, specific to native monomeric calcitonin recognizing the 23 ? 32 amide region and 11 ? 17 regions, are used for the sandwich. The first monoclonal antibody is adsorbed onto the tube walls. The second monoclonal antibody, radiolabelled with iodine-125, is used as the tracer.
